I was watching Nightline last night and saw Anne Rice being interviewed about why she has “quit” being Catholic. Here is the interview from ABC:

During the interview, Rice said that she cannot be part of a church that condemns homosexuals. With all due respect, the Catholic Church does not and has not ever condemned homosexuality; rather, the Catholic Church has condemned homosexual acts, declaring them intrinsically disordered. This is just another example of someone wanting the Church to conform to their personal beliefs when it should be the other way around; we should conform our beliefs to that of the teachings of the Church.

I hope you all are having a fantastic weekend so far. I would like to take a minute to apologize for the lack of substantial posts over the last few days. I know many of you have wondered where I have been lately. Well, things have been quite busy on my end with working, getting ready for school, etc. It is so hard to believe that this summer is practically over; school is just a couple of weeks away. To be honest, I am quite excited about getting back into a normal routine.

Over the next few days, things should begin to return to business as usual and I will have some more time to do posts here and on the Catholic Vote Action blog. I thank you for patience and for your continued reading.

I know I promised some more on the federal judge’s decision to overturn Proposition 8. But, truthfully, there are others out there who are more capable of giving you information on what this decision means for us as a Church and as a country. I recommend that you check in with our good friend the American Papist for all of your news on Proposition 8.

There is one thing I will say about the decision, however:

Earlier today, I posted this on the Catholic Vote Action blog:

Participants Carry American Flag at Immigration Rally

This Thursday, July 29th, the controversial Arizona immigration law is set to take effect. While the majority of Americans agree with the passage and enactment of this law, the Church has opposed it from the beginning.

In the most recent show of opposition, Bishop Gerald Kicanas testified before the House Subcommittee on Immigration, Citizenship, Refugees, Border Security, and International Law on July 14th. In his testimony, the bishop of Tuscon remarked on the Arizona law, calling it an example of the frustration the American people have with Congress for the legislature’s laxity in passing immigration reform…

Florida's 8th Congressional District | Source: National Atlas

Over the last several weeks, campaign ads for the upcoming November elections have begun to increase, especially in high priority, battleground districts. Florida’s 8th Congressional District is one such district. Jockeying for the seat in the House of Representatives are one outspoken, ultra-liberal Democrat, Alan Grayson, and a handful of conservative Republican hopefuls. Not to mention those running for the seat who have other or no party affiliations.

In November 2008, Democratic newcomer Alan Grayson was able to oust Republican Ric Keller who represented the district since 2001. Now, Grayson is up for re-election. After his vote on the health care bill and the stimulus, many of his constituents are beginning to question whether or not he is the right person to represent their district.

Before we can get to the November general election, however, we must first go through primary voting season, which takes place for this particular district on August 24th. While there are no Democrats running against Grayson in the Democratic primary, there are seven Republicans who will have to duke it out come August. However, there is only one that stands out to me.

President Obama signs Health Care Reform into Law | Source: White House

We learned sad news today out of Pennsylvania: $160 million worth of taxpayer money is going to fund high risk insurance plans that include coverage of legal abortions. Douglas Johnson, legislative director for the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC), stated: “This is just the first proof of the phoniness of President Obama’s assurances that federal funds would not subsidize abortion — but it will not be the last.”

Johnson also stated: “President Obama successfully opposed including language in the bill to prevent federal subsidies for abortions, and now the Administration is quietly advancing its abortion-expanding agenda through administrative decisions such as this, which they hope will escape broad public attention.”
